"Hard to find,
but worth it!"

G-Spot Records was started in June 1997 by Gunnar
Madsen, Grammy-nominated songwriter and co-founder of the
legendary acapella group The Bobs.
His previous experiences with various record labels (including Rounder
and Rhino) were all good, but by the
latter half of the 90's the record business was changing
- The industry was cautious and scared.
"I had a CD full of waltzes and a CD full of pop/rock songs.
I knew they were both great, marketable projects, but no one was
willing to bet on them. Starting my own label just made sense. I
had enough money to handle the manufacturing, I had enough clout
to line up a national distributor, and, when Tower Records mistakenly
and briefly co-opted my new company name (G-spot Records), I was
able to wrangle a $10,000 advertising credit
from them (along with a cease-and-desist order). I had instant
marketing visibility."
Madsen's first release was Spinning
World: 13 Ways of Looking at a Waltz.
"That’s the CD that clinched my distribution deal. The
distributor had never heard anything like it, and knew that it would,
eventually, find a dedicated audience. They were right!"
Spinning World worked its way into the listening stations of independent
record stores in the U.S. and Canada and sold itself. NPR
picked it up and began using it on both Morning
Edition and All Things Considered.
HBO’s Sex and the City licensed
many of the waltzes for use throughout their 2nd season. And Paramount
Pictures used it in the Marisa Tomei film
"Just a Kiss".
Madsen’s second release, a powerful folk/pop outing called
The Power of a Hat, made it into the
top 30 of college stations across the country.
"I got good airplay, great coverage nationwide. Recording that
album was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life.
I’m very proud of that record, it’s my most personal
statement."
Madsen’s next two releases, Old Mr.
Mackle Hackle (1999) and Ants in My Pants! (2001), were geared
towards families and kids. Both CDs have won the coveted Parents’
Choice Gold Award and many more national awards for excellence
in children’s entertainment – and both continue to sell
like licorice hotcakes and are now in their 4th printing.

"When I named my record company, I wasn’t thinking about
how it would play in the family entertainment realm. Disney’s
Family Fun Magazine wrote a rave review of Old Mr. Mackle Hackle,
but they wouldn’t print ‘G-Spot Records’ in their
magazine. So, I morphed the name into something their censors could
approve: ‘Gee, Spot! Records’ and drew up a logo to
go with the new name! Other than with Disney, my company name has
never been an issue."
"To me, it's all about the music. I have no interest in trying
to sell something that is less than great. Let's start with a great
record. I don’t care what style the music is – is it
good?! Then let's put on our marketing and publicist hats and bring
that music to the world."
